This is the website of freelance videographer and independent filmmaker Rulan Heunis.
I produce documentary TV films on a wide range of African subjects and also provide a video clip service to other filmmakers. If a filmmaker requires a video clip with an African theme, e.g. a clip showing a crocodile catching a fish, or a pair of lions mating, or a member of one of the indigenous tribes of Africa making music, I may be able to assist. To date my library comprises more than 90 hours of video clips. If I do not have the material that you require, I am prepared to go and search for it whilst on my travels.
At the end of 2006 I completed a documentary TV film series, in 3 parts of 1 hour each, titled “Search for the Last True Hunter Gatherers of Namibia” (see press release and résumé below for details). The original narration is in English but I plan to eventually extend it to include other major international languages.
My plans for 2007 include a new 3-part series titled “Notes from Northern Namibia”, which will cover some of the previously rarely or never recorded traditional music of some of the indigenous tribes of northern Namibia. The video material has already been collected and production of the film is in progress.
As a sideline, I specialize in producing documentary shorts and fillers, for TV broadcast purposes. The most recent production titled “To catch a guinea fowl”, shows the fascinating process of how the last hunter gatherers of the Great Kalahari, the San, construct and set a snare to catch large birds such as guinea fowl, kori bustard and ostrich, for food.
I am based in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. Due to the favourable foreign exchange ratios in respect of the South African Rand vs. US Dollar and British Pound, my services are most cost effective to overseas clients.
I use a Canon XL1s camera, producing quality 720x576 video with 48kHz stereo audio, and plan to upgrade to HD in the near future.
